The first of many funeral services for the fallen president, who was assassinated on April 15, was conducted at the White House on Wednesday, April 19, 1865. A procession then accompanied the horse-drawn hearse as Lincoln was carried to the Capitol, where he was laid in the Rotunda until the following day. The president's remains were then placed on a special train for the 1,700-mile trip to Springfield . The train carried Lincoln's son, William "Willie," who had died in Washington, D.C., in 1862, along with the President. A monument was constructed in Illinois, and is now the tomb of Lincoln, his wife, and three of his sons. This white oak grows near the monument to Lincoln .
